Swine are rarely treated one animal at a time. Water-line medication and medicated feed both work at the level of the pen, which means a single treatment decision can put dozens of hogs inside a withdrawal window simultaneously — and the record has to keep up with a group, not an individual, from the first moment.
The underlying rule is the one described in the general case for livestock withdrawal: a record has to be able to refuse a sale, not merely note that a window is open. For swine, the harder part of that job is upstream of the refusal — knowing, with certainty, which specific animals the window actually applies to.
The label is the authority. No withdrawal interval for any product or route is stated here. Water- and feed-delivered medications carry their own labelled intervals that vary by formulation and dose, and any use outside the label voids that interval — only a veterinarian can set the replacement. This page is about identifying which animals a group treatment actually covers, not about how long any interval lasts.
A pen is not an animal, and a withdrawal record has to be
Every principle in livestock withdrawal recordkeeping assumes the record can eventually be checked against a specific set of animals. That assumption is easy to satisfy for an individually tagged beef cow and much harder to satisfy for a pen of one hundred feeder pigs that arrived as a group, are managed as a group, and will likely be sold as a group. Individual ear tags are less common in commercial swine production than in cattle, and even where tags exist, few operations read every tag at every handling event — the pen, not the individual hog, is usually the unit the farm actually manages by. The withdrawal record has to describe that group precisely enough that, weeks later, someone can say with confidence exactly which hogs were inside it — not just that "some pigs in barn 3" were treated around a certain date.
Water and feed medication treat everyone, whether they need it or not
Unlike an injectable given animal by animal, medicated water or feed delivers a dose to every pig drinking or eating from that line during the treatment period — healthy and sick alike. This is often the correct veterinary approach to a pen-level health issue, but it means the withdrawal record cannot be built around "the animals that were treated" as a subset to identify later. The whole pen was dosed, and the whole pen enters the window together, which simplifies the biology and complicates the paperwork: the group identifier now has to be the unit the treatment log is built around, not an afterthought layered on top of individual entries.
Water-line dosing also raises a practical complication a farm should have an answer for before it happens: intake varies. A sick pig drinking less water than a healthy one may receive a different actual dose than the line rate assumes, and a veterinarian's guidance on dosing by water consumption is a judgment call specific to that flock's condition, not a fixed number a farm can carry forward from the last time the same product was used. The record needs to capture what was actually delivered — the concentration in the line and the period it ran — rather than assuming a uniform dose per animal.
Marking, moving, and mixing pens breaks a group-level record
Swine operations move animals between pens for reasons that have nothing to do with withdrawal — sorting by weight, making room for a new group, consolidating after a partial sale. Every one of those moves is also an opportunity to lose track of withdrawal status, because the record was built around the pen and the animal just left it.
The fix is to attach withdrawal status to the animal or the specific cohort that was actually dosed, not to the physical pen it happened to occupy that week. Say, hypothetically, half a pen is sorted off to a finishing barn while still inside a treatment window — the record has to travel with those specific hogs into the new pen, or the finishing barn's records become unreliable the moment they arrive.
Market weight and withdrawal clearance are different clocks
A hog reaching market weight is a production milestone. Clearing a withdrawal window is a residue milestone. They are unrelated, and a pen can hit market weight while several animals in it are still inside an active window from a treatment given during the finishing phase. A record built around production readiness alone — "these hogs are heavy enough to ship" — will not surface a withdrawal conflict, because weight was never the thing the window was tracking.
This is exactly the scenario a sale-time check is meant to catch: the shipping decision has to consult withdrawal status independently of weight, at the moment the load is being assembled, because weight readiness and residue clearance can disagree on the same animal.
The pressure to ship on schedule makes this worse, not better. Barn space is planned around a turn date, the next group of weaned pigs is already scheduled to arrive, and a load-out day that slips has real cost. That pressure falls hardest on exactly the animals a withdrawal check exists to catch — the ones that are ready by every measure except the one a scale cannot show.
The record has to resolve to a specific set of hogs
Everything above reduces to one test: can the record, read months later by someone who was not there, name the actual animals a group treatment applies to? If the answer is a specific ear tag range, a specific pen assignment on a specific date, or a specific cohort that has been tracked through every subsequent move, the record passes. If the answer is "the pigs in that barn, roughly," it does not — and no amount of care at the point of sale can compensate for a group the record can no longer name.
Farm40 lets a treatment be recorded against a named group as well as an individual animal, and it declines to write a sale record for a group sitting inside an active withdrawal window, checked at the moment the sale is entered. The limit: the check is only as good as the group definition it was given — if animals move between the group being sold and the group that was treated without that move being recorded, Farm40 has no way to know they are the same hogs. Keeping the group identifier attached to the animal through every move remains the operator's job.
The same identification discipline carries over to who gave the treatment and to recording it at the point of treatment, rather than reconstructing the pen's history from memory once the hogs have already moved on.
