A split operation runs organic and conventional production on the same farm at the same time — some fields certified, some not; some product organic, some a near-identical version of it that is not. It is an ordinary way to farm, and it carries a burden a wholly organic operation does not: proving, continuously, that the two streams never actually became one.

The two streams are often the same crop grown two different ways — the same variety of corn, one field certified and one not — which makes the risk harder to see than it would be with visibly different products. A bin of organic soybeans and a bin of conventional soybeans look identical once mixed; the only thing that could have told them apart was the record showing which bin held which, made before the two ever had a chance to meet.

That burden falls entirely on records, because the risk it manages — commingling — leaves no physical trace once it happens. Everything a split operation does to keep its status intact comes down to documenting separation before the fact, since nothing can demonstrate it afterward.

Commingling can't be disproven after it happens

The reason split-operation recordkeeping is so exacting is that its central risk is undetectable once it occurs. A test on a finished crop generally cannot tell you whether it spent time in a bin that also held a conventional lot last week. There is no forensic path back to the moment two streams touched — which means the only defence is never letting the question arise, and the only proof that it never arose is a record showing the streams stayed apart the whole time.

The goal is a separation scheme simple enough that maintaining it never competes with the speed of the actual work.

Shared equipment is the point most operations miss

Storage and lot codes are the visible half of separation. The half that catches operations out is equipment used on both sides — a seeder, a combine, a grain auger, a wash line — because the equipment itself has no organic status, and it carries residue from whatever it touched last onto whatever it touches next. Many standards allow shared equipment provided it is cleaned between organic and conventional use, but “provided it is cleaned” is exactly the clause a record has to satisfy, not the physical act alone.

The record that does this work is a cleaning log: what was run before, what cleaning was performed, and what was run after, in sequence, with dates. Without it, a certifier has no way to know that the sequence you describe is the sequence that happened, and “we always clean between uses” is an assertion, not a record.

The cleaning log is worth keeping even on days it seems unnecessary, such as when the equipment happens to run organic material both before and after a conventional pass with nothing in between. The log’s job is to make the sequence legible without anyone having to remember it, and an occasional gap in a log that is otherwise complete raises more questions than a log that simply notes every pass, clean or not.

Personnel and scheduling are part of the separation, not just storage

A split operation’s risk does not live only in bins and lot codes — it lives in the order people do things in. Handling the organic side first and the conventional side second, on a fixed schedule that never varies by convenience, is a practical control worth documenting alongside the physical separation, because a worker who handles conventional grain in the morning and organic grain in the afternoon without cleaning in between has recreated the exact risk the equipment log exists to prevent, even with perfectly clean bins. A simple note of the day’s handling order is cheap insurance against a habit quietly drifting the wrong way.

A split field record has to survive being read alone

The test of a split operation’s field records is whether a single record, pulled at random and read with no other context, still identifies unambiguously which parcel it belongs to and that parcel’s current organic status. If a field record could plausibly belong to either the organic or the conventional side depending on which folder it was filed in, the record has already failed, because the folder is not part of the record.
